Love the list of observations. Despite being Australian I’ve never taken to thongs in hot nor cold weather. As for the cheese. Sorry about that. There was a law passed on this about ten years ago much to the disappointment of many lovers of fine cheese, only some of whom liked vegemite!

Hi Katja – I was interested in your comment that heaters are not allowed. I had just been thinking about whether we should buy an outdoor heater for our Christmas Eve function – but now I can say that we are being environmentally friendly by not having one! (Not that it is really cold in Melbourne ofcourse). There’s not bad weather – there’s just inappropriate clothing!

Hab ich gemacht! Unsere angeblich nächste Insel war nach offizieller Auskunft aber ganz schön weit weg… Einen Tag später haben wir dann zufällig eine nähere gefunden. Aber unpraktisch ist das ja dennoch, sein Zeug in der Wohnung zu sammeln und dann durch die Gegend zu tragen!

“energy efficiency” is magic word number 1 – Germany is determined to become one of the most energy-efficient economies of the world. Naturally, the second magic word is “renewable energy”. In 2020, even if energy efficiency gains are only moderate, 47 percent of the power used in Germany will come from renewable energies (more about that in English: http://www.unendlich-viel-energie.de/en/economy/details/browse/1/article/135/renewable-energies-will-continue-to-grow-rapidly.html). Regarding only electricity supply: renewable energies have crossed the 20 percent mark already! And believe it or not: Even solar power has its fair share But of course, wind, water and biomass are more important.

I was interested that Germany will be closing down its nuclear power plants. Ironic that people in Australia are still talking about establishing some here!
